According to millions of people around the world, jewelry is an integral means of expression. For spouses and lovers, it is a sign of commitment and love. For innumerable cultures, it is a means for preserving history, cultural, and familial traditions. For the fashionable and trend-setting, it's a scintillating signifier for style and savvy.

Jewelry's many purposes make it invaluable—that's why it's vital that anyone creating, fixing, or designing your jewelry is a certified expert. For the ultimate jewelry encounter, make sure you know the answer to this question: what is a master jeweler?

The Jeweler Basics

Before understanding what makes a master jeweler, it's important to know what makes a jeweler—or bench jeweler as they're sometimes called—in the first place.

A jeweler is a creative artisan who employs a wide variety of skills to create, amend, edit, or repair jewelry. These skills often include goldsmithing, engraving, wax carving, polishing, electroplating, stone setting, fabrication, and significantly many more. For a jeweler to be competent at his job, he needs to be flexible and deeply knowledgeable in his craft.

Jewelers may work for companies or as individuals—like master jeweler Christopher Anderson does. In fact, over half of all jewelers in United States were self-employed in the United States.

Jeweler Advancement

To prove their mettle on a wide scale, many jewelers seek education and certification from respected jewelry making institutions. Two such organizations include the Jewelers of America and the Gemological Institute of America . Members of such organizations have proven exemplary dedication and skill for their craft.

Taking such courses and passing the examinations allows jewelers to advance their abilities and—most importantly—remain up-to-date with modern standards of jewelry making. This industry constantly evolves to produce better treasures and keepsakes and it's vital that its artisans remain current with new innovations and techniques. These certifications also offer peace-of-mind to the consumer; those that pass the exams feature hands both capable and trusted.

What is a Master Jeweler?

Artisans who have achieved the rank of master jeweler certification from the Jewelers of America are at the highest rank in the industry. According to the website, those certified "demonstrate mastery in all skill levels." The vetting process is a thorough one that verifies all the required talents, knowledge, and dedication required of the title.

Through the Jewelers of America, a prospective participant must either pass all other levels in the organization or take a specialized preliminary exam that tests required skills. After passing either requirement, the participant takes a comprehensive, two-hour written exam and must later prove himself in three particular bench tests.

All three bench tests—which are estimated to take a combined 39 hours of work—gauge the participant in a variety of different jewelry making tasks. Two of those three bench tests will be overseen and verified by a qualified proctor.

Upon successfully completing these tasks, the participant joins the exclusive network of master jewelers across the country. Christopher Anderson, for example, is the lone master jeweler Rockford, Illinois has to offer. There is—certifiably—no better person to visit when you wish to fix precious family heirlooms or create brand new ones.
